Terra Andina, Valle Centrale, Carmenere 2008, $14.99
This is quite an elegant carmenere for a wine that is made to drink within its first three years. It has a hint of the grape's trademark herbal character in the aromas and flavors, along with plenty of ripe blackberry and cassis fruit. It's smooth in the mouth with velvety tannins. Try it with a burger or a sausage-and-mushroom pizza.
Carmenere is considered Chile's signature grape variety. It arrived in the country in the late 1800s with European immigrants escaping from the devastating vineyard plague of phylloxera and looking for new places to grow grapes and make wine. It was one of the authorized grapes in Bordeaux, where it was a bit cool for the grape. The temperate climate and long growing season make Chile's Central Valley just the place for this immigrant.
Available at Crush! A Wine Boutique in Flower Mound, Reserve Wines in Las Colinas and WineStyles in Watauga.

“We bought every Carmenere we saw from the 2007 and 2008 vintages—because we prefer these young and because those are the ones you are most likely to see...We tasted them in blind flights over several nights.
Our best of tasting, Terra Andina "Reserva," was at once noteworthy and highly drinkable, and seemed so warming that we thought of roast meats and fireplaces. It's a lot of wine for $11.99.”

A great review for 2008 Terra Andina Carmenere in the Chicago Tribune by Bill Daley: “From Chile's Central Valley, a wine with a lively berry fragrance touched with a hint of cherry and mint. It's a puckery, fruit-forward wine with notes of cherries, mushrooms and black pepper…” “Three corkscrews”.

A group of wine enthusiasts and growers met on a recent sunny afternoon to taste wines and a variety of barbecue-- Vic Poulos, owner of Zin Valle Winery; Ken Stark, owner of La Vina Winery; Ray Stafford, El Paso Times publisher and wine collector; Mark Heins, wine expert and restaurateur; Mostafa Rifai, wine lover and restaurateur; Pablo Villa, El Paso Times presentation editor and wine novice; Riccardo Barraza, owner of Italian Wine Imports; and Tammy Diaz, wine expert. Sausage, ribs, brisket, chicken and smoked turkey filled the table. Two kinds of sauce were deployed -- one sweet, the other fiery hot.
And one by one, the bottles were open. 2008 Terra Andina Carmenere from Chile ($9.99), wowed the crowd. Its blend of black currant, blackberry, grilled red pepper and black pepper went well with everything served. "This had the best value of the bunch," Poulos said.
